Company History

Cognizant was founded on 26th January 1994 in Chennai, India, as Dun & Bradstreet Satyam Software. It was established as a joint venture between Dun & Bradstreet and Satyam Computers. DBSS began as an in-house technology development and maintenance unit for Dun & Bradstreet, with just 50 employees.

In the year 1996, Dun & Bradstreet spun off several subsidiaries, including DBSS, to form Cognizant Corporation. Dun & Bradstreet acquired Satyam’s 24% stakes in DBSS for $3.4 million and moved its headquarters to United States in the year 1997. DBSS was renamed Cognizant Technology Solutions.

Cognizant Technology went public with its IPO on NASDAQ in the year 1998. In the early 2000s, the company focused on application development, maintenance and offshore delivery models, while expanding to business process outsourcing and business consulting.
