OpenText Corporation was founded in the year 1991 by Canadian software developer Timothy Bray, along with University of Waterloo professors Frank Tompa and Gaston Gonnet to create the first online Oxford English Dictionary in partnership with Oxford University. In September 1991, the company shipped its first product, a search engine based on OED indexing technology.

OpenText moved to enterprise content management, information governance and business process solutions in the early 2000s. It acquired companies like Ixos Software AG in 2003 and Hummingbird in 2006. In July 2020, the company partnered with the cybersecurity company NINJIO.
